Superblue unveils The Chronicles of Miami public mural by JR

The Chronicles of Miami is a monumental new mural by renowned artist JR that premiered during Miami Art Week. Featuring 1,048 portraits of Miami residents and visitors, the public artwork is the latest iteration of JR’s acclaimed participatory mural series, Chronicles.

JR’s new public mural, The Chronicles of Miami captures the essence of Miami by documenting its diverse residents. In November 2022, JR’s mobile studio journeyed through eight neighbourhoods encouraging passersby to pose and represent themselves for a monumental collage. Driving the series is the desire to create an expressive snapshot of the city. From Miami Beach’s party-goers to Little Havana’s expert domino players, the work captures over 1000 portraits of the residents and visitors who make Miami unique. Recognizable faces like Pharrell Williams and Paul Pogba can be spotted amongst the city’s locals, all depicted side by side as equals, coming together to mark a particular moment in time.

Premiering at Superblue on December 5 for the launch of Miami Art Week, as part of their ongoing Every Wall is a Door exhibition, this mural of over 1000 portraits is a community offering, symbolising the interactive art experience inside that relies on participation for completion. The launch event featured music by José Parlá and a photo booth that captured portraits of the evening’s guests.

The Chronicles of Miami will be on view during Miami Art Week 2023. Together with SFER IK, Therme Art also co-hosted a Wellbeing Culture Forum at Superblue titled Art in Nature: Creating Our Ancestral Future, which explored the complex interaction between art and nature, and how ancestral wisdom serves as a necessary repository of knowledge to create an environmentally sustainable future.
